Paul studied ceramics at the Belfast Art College, worked in ceramics studios in Derry and London before returning to Northern Ireland as an Art & Design teacher. Since retirement he has built a home studio and developed a range of work in both earthenware and stoneware.
His earthenware clay of choice is terracotta and he loves the challenge of making with ‘flower pot’ clay through his preferred method of slab building. Stoneware clay allows him to create more interesting surfaces and use a wider range of glazes. It also enables him to  produce frost resistant, outdoor sculptural pieces.
His main influences are cultural history, ancient history, archaeology, erosion, decay, nature and landscape; but his joy and sense of fun shines through much of his work.
